Character Name: Jessica Ushiromiya
Canon: Umineko no Naku Koro Ni
Character Background: The Ushiromiya family is notable for being one of the richest families in Japan. During World War II, the main branch of the family had been wiped out, but Kinzo Ushiromiya, a member of one of the branch families, had acquired a vast amount of wealth and restored the family name. He then had four children with his wife, all of whom would grow up to have their eyes on succeeding him as the head and the owner of that wealth.
Jessica Ushiromiya was born as the daughter of Kinzo’s eldest son, Krauss, and as such was raised to be a proper successor to the family name. Even though her father is the oldest of Kinzo’s children, she is the third-oldest cousin at the age of 18. It took her parents twelve years of trying before they were able to have her, allowing Krauss’s younger siblings to have children of their own and present them as rivals for the headship.
Jessica lives with her parents on the island of Rokkenjima, a private island bought by her grandfather many years ago. Once every year all of the Ushiromiya family gathers at Rokkenjima for the annual family conference. By the time the game begins in 1986, the conference has become a place for the adults to discuss Kinzo’s failing health and the subject of how his inheritance will be divided up. Despite Kinzo’s business success, each of his children is facing debts and in need of money, so the discussions become rather heated.
The specific details of what happens next are hotly debated by the world, but it's known that some sort of accident or massacre occurred on the island while it was cutoff from the mainland during a typhoon. Only one person was known to survive the 1986 family conference, Jessica's aunt Eva, and Eva refuses to tell anyone what happened during those two days. Thus the Rokkenjima murders become a "catbox" in society, with many theories being thrown about as to how the rest of the Ushiromiya family died - leading to the different 'arcs' of the game.
Character personality: First and foremost, Jessica is notable for being a very improper girl, despite being pretty high up in the line of succession. Her Japanese is masculine, as opposed to the typical feminine speech that would be expected from a high-class girl; this is simulated in English by swearing and very casual phrasing. Her speech isn't the only masculine thing about her, though - she's naturally a tomboy, less interested in manners and how to be a proper housewife than how to perfect her boxing technique.
Of course, she is girly in one notable way - her obsession with finding love. She despairs over being the only girl in her class without a boyfriend, and she develops a crush on one of her family's servants because she's so isolated on the island that he's the only boy her age to like. She's also often blinded by her own concerns about romance to the point that she winds up being less supportive of others'. Her friend Shannon is the one who often winds up suffering for it, while Jessica doesn't even realize that she's being a poor friend.
Even outside of her desperate desire to be in love, Jessica is the type of girl who is easily ruled by her emotions. When she's upset, she turns to crying and cursing; when she's angry, her first instinct is to punch first, think later. Her emotions tend to overrule logic and common sense - after all, in EP3, she runs unarmed to attack her aunt Eva, despite the fact that she's holding a gun, because she believes that Eva was the one to murder her parents. She's stubborn and fool-hearty, not believing that giving up is an option, and so she can often take things too far. Her rough exterior and way of speaking is in some ways to protect herself and hide how vulnerable she is on the inside, although her brash decisions often wind up being regretted afterward.
She feels most at home - most like herself - while at school, free from the prying eyes of her parents. Without the pressures of being the next heir (or, more accurately, the wife of the next heir) on her shoulders, she’s able to enjoy being a fairly typical teenage girl. She plays guitar in a band with her friends, gossips about boys, and dresses up in outfits that would probably give her mother a major headache. She doesn’t act like the perfect heir while on Rokkenjima by any means, but she also knows better than to express herself fully around her conservative parents - and so she’s formed her school persona, “Jessie,” to be the person that she can like being.
Effects of memory loss: Initially, Jessica would be quite panicked over the loss of memories, and would likely be guarded and defensive until she really understands what’s going on. It would seem like a kidnapping to her, and her instinct would be to fight first, think later, in order to cover up the fear and try to survive. Once she realizes that Kyriakos is a safe place (or, well, relatively safe), she'll relax into the situation and be less aggressive as a default, although it'll still be higher than her baseline levels.
In general, however, the memory loss will just serve to bring out more of her “true-to-herself” persona. Without the pressures to please her parents and the rest of the family, she wouldn’t even bother to hide who she is - she’d be free to be as much of a tomboy as she wants without any judgement, and she’d take full advantage of that. She’d feel comfortable having concerts and playing electric guitar in public, as opposed to during school events that she knows will be missed, and won’t even have to worry about manners.
Also, related to the above, she’d be less needlessly rebellious once in Kyriakos. A lot of her rebellion stemmed from her unhappiness as the next-in-line to the Ushiromiya headship and the way her parents treated her, so in Kyriakos she’d have no reason to act out. She may still have her rough style of speech, but she’s less likely to insult people with it, and she won’t have a reason to intentionally throw an echo’s game or cause problems while playing with a team unless they’re doing things that she believes are wrong, like killing people.
